What makes N2 difficult

The JLPT N2 exam is the level most employers ask for if you are looking to work in Japan. Reading passages used in this course will come from editorials, business writing and opinion pieces, and the questions often ask what the writer means rather than what the writer says.

You need around 6,000 words, and many of them are close in meaning and differ mainly in how formal they are. The grammar has the same problem, and there is a lot of it. Time is short in the reading section, and most people who fail do not finish it. The listening section also includes quick response questions and longer comprehension questions with no written prompt to follow at native speed.

How this course helps

The tough areas in the JLPT N2 exam each get their own dedicated teaching time. You learn how Japanese opinion writing is structured so you can find the writer's position quickly instead of translating each line, while vocabulary and grammar are taught in contrasting sets sorted by formality, which is how the exam separates them.

For reading, you are timed based on exam conditions, so you get to see how you would perform in the actual exam. You get to practise both of the listening question types that N2 candidates find most difficult, including note-taking for the longer recordings. The downloadable vocabulary decks give you the high-frequency words and kanji to learn in-between sessions.
