What this cohort is about

What this cohort is about

A 4-week intensive course designed to prepare students for the JLPT N5 exam. Covers basic listening, grammar, reading, vocabulary, and kanji with weekly mock questions and practice tests.

4-week intensive JLPT preparation

  • Weekly live sessions with an expert JLPT instructor
  • Mock questions and practice tests every week
  • Key vocabulary and kanji preparation
  • Downloadable vocabulary decks and materials
  • What makes N5 difficult

You need to read kana quickly, not just correctly. Most students can sound out hiragana and katakana but take too long per sentence to finish the paper.

About 100 kanji come up on N5, and if you have only seen them on flashcards you will not recognise them inside a full sentence. Particles cause the most avoidable mistakes at this level, especially は and が, and に and で.

For those new to JLPT, the audio listening questions will come as a shock to you as they do not repeat the audio; you only have one chance to listen and understand what they are asking.

How this course helps

In each session, you will read against a clock every week until kana recognition is fast enough for the exam. You learn kanji inside the words and sentences that actually appear on N5 papers.

You will also work through particle exercises built from the mistakes N5 candidates make most often, and your instructor corrects them with you in the live session.

Listening practice runs at exam speed from week one. Your weekly practice test is timed, so you know how long each section takes you before you sit the real thing.
